Ranfurly-Naseby's 10th Anniversary Shoot

In February, on their home ground, the Ranfurly-Naseby Club drew friends from Christchurch to Roxburgh. A get-together on Friday evening soon had the accommodation and who's who sorted out and we were all ready for shooting next morning.

This course was an historic re-enactment trip from 150 years ag, when settlers from Dunedin ventured into the hinterland seeking their fortunes. Beginning with packing of swags after coming ashore then searching for gold, passing through Dunback, on to Kyeburn and finally Hogburn (Naseby), meeting with weather problems, insects in the precious food, followed by an invasion of rats which had to be shot, and later some claim jumpers to frighten off, the course was intended to keep those shooting on their toes as well as learning the area's history. A fruit machine set-up with vegies on strings proved a hard target, and you shot at a chocolate fish target with mixed results.

Saturday evening at the Naseby Golf Club was relaxation time where Club President Jill Smith welcomed the gathering and prizes for the day's sport were handed out, before a celebratory cake was cut by Cleone Brown, wife of the late Allan Brown, a founding member. Then all settled back for a lovely dinner catered for by the Naseby Golf Club.

A fall of snow on the hills overnight surprised the northern people, but most were back at the range by 10am to continue shooting, leaving after lunch for their homeward journey.

President Jill Smith commented: "It was a great weekend and everybody enjoyed the sport provided. It's nice to be able to bring friends to our home range to join in the shooting. Our club is not a large one, but we have more than 40 country members and run an International postal shoot through a web site - which means we are in contact with Australia, USA and others, and although they have not been to Naseby - they have certainly heard of us!"
